Larry Hershkowitz
Survivor from Poland | Auschwitz, Mauthausen
Larry Hershkowitz was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1923. He lived in the Lodz Ghetto for three years until it was liquidated. He lost his father, brother, and a sister when food was no longer supplied. He jumped into a garbage can to escape a trap of being offered food by the Germans to mark them for deportation. However, he obeyed his dying mother’s request to surrender with his sister to the police. He was deported to Auschwitz and then moved to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. He was liberated from there in March 1944 by Americans. He almost died from food poisoning, but recovered in hospital in Linz. He came to the United States in 1947, and he had only one younger sister to survive the Holocaust. He has visited Israel.
