Maria Borenstein was born in Belarus in 1930. She left when she was ten years old, and was fired on by Germans as her family fled. They traveled seven weeks by horse and buggy, and her father, mother, brother, and sister survived deep in Russia. She was liberated in Russia and came to the United States in 1965. Her husband came from Poland. She speaks very strongly about the United States as “the best democracy in the world.” She speaks five different languages.
